On 9 December 2010, the inaugural Engen Charity Golf Challenge took place at the King David Golf Course in Bellville, in aid of the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, where 100% of the funds went towards the Hospital’s world renowned Burns Unit.

Since 2008, Engen has been raising funds in support of its R1 Million by 2010 campaign where Engen’s initiatives in Soccer (Goals for Charity), Motorsport (Racing for Red), Cycling (Ride for Red) and the Engen Red Cross Charity Golf Challenge have raised over R1 Million.

With perfect weather conditions, the golf day commenced at 11h30 with its first tee-off. The participants were treated to a light snack before taking to the course. After a full day of excitement and fun on the course, all participants were invited to the post-match dinner and prize-giving function. Hershelle Gibbs, former South African cricketer, was also involved in the golf day, including JP Duminy, Ashwell Prince, Tyren Arendse (Santos FC captain), Boebie Solomons (Santos FC coach), with radio personality, Jeremy Harris as the event MC.

The Red Cross Children’s Hospital is very grateful for Engen’s ongoing contribution, Helen White, Communications Manager of the Red Cross Hospital Children’s Trust, commented: ‘We would like to thank Engen for their ongoing support to the hospital and the Burns unit in particular; their five year commitment has created so many opportunities to the lives of young burn victims.’

Engen would like to thank all the sponsors, stakeholders, media, and especially the golf day participants for their generous contributions to the first Engen Red Cross Charity Golf Challenge and look forward to see everyone back on the course for the second instalment.

Helen White came forward and accepted this year’s contribution to the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.
